With a hint of spring in the air, it might be time to have a big clean out at home. However, with £140m of used clothing and over £12.5 billion of household food waste going to landfill every year, please think twice before binning an unwanted item. Can you still use it?
re3 – the waste management partnership for Central Berkshire – is encouraging and supporting residents to waste less and recycle more and better.
The average family throws away around £700 of food a year. By planning meals, only buying what you need, storing food properly and freezing and using leftovers for other dishes, you can help reduce the 15 million tonnes of food waste generated in the UK every year.
A spring clean out should mean dusting off the clothes at the back of the wardrobe and mending, altering or upcycling them rather than sending them to landfill. Proper storage, including using moth repellent and sealing clothes in vacuum packs, can help clothes look better for longer.
By stopping and thinking if the item you are about to throw out can still be used in some capacity, we can all reduce the amount we waste, save money and help create cleaner and greener communities.
