More residential roads in Reading have applied to become Play Streets.
Reading Borough Council’s Play Streets scheme allows temporary closures of streets so children can play safely outdoors and close to home.
Exbourne Road, Whitley Wood, Cumberland Road, Newtown, and Armour Road in Tilehurst have recently applied to be added to the scheme, which previously involved seven streets.
The first Play Street was hosted by Lorne Street – just off Oxford Road – in October 2013. Since starting, the council has received no objections and the scheme has proved popular. Other schemes operate in South View Avenue, Blenheim Road, Larkswood Close, St Peter’s Road, School Terrace and Talfourd Avenue.
Play Street applicants need support signatures from around two-thirds of residents, and a Play Street can be created for up to three hours, on any day of the week, up to once every fortnight.
