Exactly 45 years after the first humans walked on the moon, the people of Reading and surrounding villages have collectively managed to walk there!
The Beat the Street walking challenge has just finished in the area, with a grand total of 244,537 miles walked. More than 12,000 people participated in Reading during May, walking over 170,000 miles, and the villagers of Theale, Mortimer and Pangbourne have been busy since then making up the remaining distance.
The competition was open for everyone in the area, with participants using a smart card to check in at Beat Boxes scattered around the area. Points were collected by visiting two or more boxes, and participants could join a team to help them win prizes. The Reading team challenge was won by All Saints School, with Micklands Primary and New Christchurch Primary also claiming a share of the £5,000 prize money.
